Anant Pradhan & Larry McDonald – The Thief Who Came To Dinner (2026) Single
Label: Names You Can Trust
Release date: 10/19/2026
Anant Pradhan and Larry McDonald return to Names You Can Trust with a new instrumental reggae release, following their acclaimed 2022 debut inspired by the golden era of Jamaican music and classic cinema soundtracks. Once again drawing inspiration from legendary composer Henry Mancini, the duo revisits the musical atmosphere of the 1973 film The Thief Who Came to Dinner, transforming its cinematic arrangements into a vibrant, vintage Jamaican reggae sound.
Reimagined in a funky, 1970s-inspired instrumental style, “Thief” captures the spirit of Jamaica’s golden-era recording studios, blending rich horn arrangements, infectious rhythms and the unmistakable character of classic instrumental reggae. The recording highlights the musicianship and creative chemistry of Pradhan and McDonald’s ensemble, bringing together experienced performers whose collective contributions give the music its authentic, timeless appeal.
With Larry McDonald now in his seventh decade of an extraordinary musical career, both artists continue to strengthen their connection to Jamaican music as members of the legendary The Skatalites touring group. Their latest recordings also showcase an impressive lineup of musicians from New York’s reggae scene, including Preet Patel and Rich Terrana of The Frightnrs, trombonist Clark Gayton, Matt Burdi and Michael Sarason of The Far East, Brett Tubin of Channel Tubes, trumpeter Billy Aukstik and bassist Steve Capeccia. Additional studio contributions come from acclaimed producer and musician Victor Axelrod (Ticklah).
While “Thief” draws directly from the cinematic sounds of the 1970s, the B-side, “Earl”, emerged from spontaneous studio improvisation. The result is a breezy, melodic reggae instrumental filled with warm Caribbean rhythms and a nostalgic atmosphere, evoking images of white sandy beaches, swaying palm trees and vintage island soundtracks.
“Earl” pays tribute to the late Jamaican pianist Earl Appleton, with Anant Pradhan moving effortlessly between saxophone and piano. The composition reflects his versatility as a musician, arranger and bandleader, balancing a deep respect for Jamaican musical traditions with an original creative vision.
Together, Anant Pradhan and Larry McDonald deliver a compelling celebration of instrumental reggae, ska, Jamaican jazz and cinematic soundtrack music. Released through Names You Can Trust, “Thief” and “Earl” demonstrate how the timeless sounds of Jamaica’s golden era continue to inspire new interpretations while preserving the musical craftsmanship and collaborative spirit that define the genre.
