Biography
Damian Robert Nesta Marley, also known as Jr. Gong, was born on July 21, 1978, in Kingston, Jamaica. He is a Jamaican reggae singer, deejay, and songwriter, and the youngest son of legendary reggae musician Bob Marley and Jamaican singer and former Miss World Cindy Breakspeare. Damian began performing at a young age and formed the musical group the Shephards at 13, which performed at the 1992 Reggae Sunsplash festival. After the group disbanded, he pursued a solo career with the support of his father's label, Tuff Gong.
Marley released his debut album, Mr. Marley, in 1996, followed by Halfway Tree in 2001. The latter won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album and established him as an artist capable of combining traditional reggae with dancehall influences. His major breakthrough came with his 2005 album Welcome to Jamrock, whose title track addressed poverty, crime, politics, and social conditions in Jamaica. The single became an international success, reaching No. 13 on the UK Singles Chart and No. 55 on the Billboard Hot 100, while the album was eventually certified gold in the United States.
In 2010, Damian collaborated with American rapper Nas on Distant Relatives, an album exploring African heritage, poverty, identity, and social issues through a fusion of reggae and hip-hop. The album reached No. 5 on the Billboard 200 and topped several genre-specific Billboard charts. Marley later became a member of the supergroup SuperHeavy alongside Mick Jagger, Joss Stone, Dave Stewart, and A. R. Rahman. He also expanded his sound through collaborations with artists such as Skrillex, most notably on the 2012 single "Make It Bun Dem," which achieved international chart success.
Damian's fourth studio album, Stony Hill, was released in 2017 and won the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards. Across his career, he has become known for blending reggae, dancehall, hip-hop, and reggae fusion while addressing themes such as Jamaican culture, African ancestry, social inequality, and political issues. With four Grammy Awards to his name, Damian Marley has established an identity and career distinct from his father's legacy while continuing the Marley family's influence on reggae music worldwide.
