Biography
Mortimer is a rising Jamaican recording artist whose captivating voice effortlessly blends traditional roots reggae with progressive, contemporary Jamaican sounds. Known for his smooth transitions between raspy alto and silky falsetto, his unique tone and unhurried delivery are signatures of his evolving sound.
Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Mortimer originally aspired to become a soldier or auto engineer. However, his love for music—sparked as a child singing in church—ultimately guided him to a musical path. In 2014, he released his first EP Message Music via VP Records, which earned critical acclaim and marked the beginning of his professional journey.
A key turning point came when he collaborated with reggae revivalist Protoje on the track “Protection,” featured on Protoje’s acclaimed album Ancient Future. Continued collaborations with producer Winta James followed, including “Nice Up Di Scene” on the Mile High Riddim and “Truths & Rights,” a standout from Protoje’s Grammy-nominated album A Matter of Time.
In 2018, Mortimer released “Careful” via Overstand Entertainment/Easy Star Records, a track praised by BBC’s David Rodigan and included in Apple Music’s “Best of 2018.” His 2019 follow-up single “Lightning”—a modern lovers rock ballad—further demonstrated his lyrical and emotional depth.
Both singles are featured on Fight the Fight, his debut EP with Overstand Entertainment, released in November 2019. The six-track project blends live instrumentation, rich production, and deeply personal lyrics, delivering everything from hard-hitting roots to soulful lovers rock and spiritual anthems.
Mortimer draws inspiration from legends like Bob Marley, Jacob Miller, and Donny Hathaway, as well as modern icons like Stephen Marley and John Legend. Through his music, he shares messages of love, hope, and self-reflection, bringing soulful reggae into the future while staying rooted in tradition.
