Biography
Yaksta, born Kemaul M. Martin, is a reggae and dancehall recording artist and songwriter from St. Mary, Jamaica. Raised by his single mother and sisters in a challenging community, he chose music as a path away from violence and hardship. His passion and resilience quickly made him a standout voice in modern Jamaican music.
Before pursuing music full-time, Yaksta worked in hospitality and ran a small clothing business, all while honing his songwriting craft. With an early love for reggae and dancehall culture, he soon realized that music was his true calling. “I am music incarnate and I’ve given up on avoiding my destiny,” he says.
Yaksta first gained viral attention in 2017 with his single “Home,” a powerful commentary on class divides in Jamaica that resonated deeply with working-class audiences. The track’s success propelled him into the spotlight, leading to increased demand at live shows and events across the island. He followed up with “Boogie Woogie,” a genre-blending track fusing 60s rocksteady and ska with modern pop and roots reggae vibes.
During the pandemic, Yaksta released “Humans” and the breakthrough anthem “Ambition,” earning praise for promoting uplifting, conscious messages. These tracks positioned him as one of Jamaica’s most promising new voices. He has since expanded his catalog with songs like “Assets (Fowl Coop),” “That Time Again,” “Fete Life,” and “Free My People,” steadily growing a global fan base.
Yaksta continues to captivate audiences both in Jamaica and abroad with relatable lyrics, authentic storytelling, and high-energy performances. With each release, he reinforces his status as a rising star and cultural force in reggae and dancehall.
